DRUM. DANCE. RISE

Emporium, London Road
7pm-1pm

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

On February 14th 2015 people from across Brighton & Hove will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express our outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and rise to demand an end at last to violence against women.

ONE BILLION RISING BRIGHTON is calling for people to take part and raise awareness of violence against women and girls. An evening of speakers, entertainers and professionals will come together and deliver the message that the city of Brighton & Hove will not condone violence towards women and girls, that every resident has a role in tackling violence against women and girls and sending out a clear message that these crimes are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city.

An evening of entertainment and speakers is planned for the City to lend its voice to the global call for an end to Violence Against Women and Girls.

Compere Phil Jones (Hatful of Rain) will lead you through a night including:
Qukulele: Loud Women with Little Guitars
Aneesa Chaudhry: Jazz vocalist extraordinare
Bloco Branco: High Octane Samba, funk and breakbeats.

Previous Brighton OBR events have included speeches by Caroline Lucas, the actor Julie Graham and a 200 person flashmob outside Churchill Square.

RISE Volunteer organiser Madelaine Hunter said ‘For one woman to stand up to violence is a real challenge but the One Billion Rising Campaign has shown that we can all unite over the world to rise up against it and I am very honoured to be part of this event.’
