Thriving Mothers create a Thriving World

On World Hunger Day we are thinking of those women here and abroad who struggle to nourish themselves.

World Hunger Day2

Today, May 28th is World Hunger Day. Are you surprised to hear that this day exists? Are you surprised to hear that one billion women and girls - that's almost 12% of the world population - suffer from malnutrition today? Would it surprise you to hear that this is not just something that happens 'over there' but that this includes women right here in the UK, too?

As a feminist organisation, we know that women suffer most when times are hard, all over the world. And times are hard for many. The campaign website says, 'When nutritious food is scarce, families must make hard choices. Girls are fed last and least. Mothers eat after the rest of their family is fed.' We know this happens here - women have told us they eat once a day so they can feed their children.

Malnutrition doesn't just affect mum. It can affect a growing baby both in the womb and after birth. The World Hunger Day campaign believes that we can end malnutrition - it says, 'By investing in women, we can break the cycle of hunger and create a world where we all thrive', and it sets out eight common practices that will ensure this.

Do you want to help, here in Brighton and Hove? Donations to RISE support mothers and children fleeing abuse access the help and support they need.

Many women in abusive relationships experience economic abuse, limiting access to resources to provide food for their families. We are also working with SEA to raise awareness of these issues and advocate for better support for women to rebuild economic stability after abuse.

Today we hold those women who are putting their families first in our hearts and send them our love. We thank those businesses and individuals who have donated food gifts to us and we look forward to a day where women no longer hunger, or thirst.
