Ali’s RISE 8K Story: Cake, Community and the Power of Running Together

Posted on April, 2026

As the RISE 8K Run for Women returns to Brighton in 2026, we caught up with Ali from Pound Hill Pounders Running Club to hear why she took part for the first time last year — and why the sense of community, cause and (lots of) cake made it one of her favourite races ever.

The RISE 8K Run for Women will return to Brighton in 2026, bringing together thousands of women to run, jog and walk in support of the incredible work of RISE UK, a charity that supports people affected by domestic abuse.

We spoke to Ali from Pound Hill Pounders Running Club about why she decided to take part last year — and what she loved about the event.

How long have you been running and what motivated you to start?

I started running properly in 2019 and joined Pound Hill Pounders in 2021 shortly after the club was formed by Paul Smith. I wanted an exercise that was cheap and easy as I wanted to keep fit and meet like minded people.

What made you decide to take part in the RISE 8K Run for Women?

I’d heard incredible things about this run but had never actually taken part. It’s a lovely distance for all abilities, whether you’re a beginner or been running for a long time and it’s in a beautiful location. It’s a flat route and there is cake at the end – lots of cake!!

Had you done the event before?

No I hadn’t.

What was the best part of the day?

Honestly it was quite a surreal event being all women. It gave me goosebumps seeing everyone supporting each other and cheering each other on. As the course is an out and back you could high five each other as you were passing. Oh, and did I mention there was A LOT of cake?!

How do you see events like this empowering women or supporting women’s health and wellness?

Running events, particularly women only runs, empower participants and support health by creating safe environments, building supportive communities, and physical and mental confidence. These events address specific barriers that often prevent women from engaging in, or enjoying, physical activity.

How did it feel running for such an important cause?

It’s an incredible feeling, knowing you’re running to support people affected by domestic abuse. It brings a different meaning to why we’re all there. Its not just about the running; it’s about the charity. The support we’re providing to help those in need. It adds motivation and changes your perspective to why we’re all there.

Would you recommend it to other runners?

I absolutely 100% would recommend this race to other runners. I have to say it was one of my favourite races ever.

Will you be back for the 2026 event?

Unfortunately I can’t attend this year as I am signed up to another race on the same day. However, many Pound Hill Pounders members will definitely be flying the flag for the women!!

The RISE 8K Undercliff Run for Women takes place on Sunday 18th October, if you would like to join us on the Start Line, you can register here.
