Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your running background?

I’m a qualified England Athletics Run Coach who enjoys searching for new challenges and reaching new heights even though I’m now in my 50s!

Although I enjoyed running at school, I really only rediscovered my love for it while training for my first ‘Race for Life’ over 20 years ago. For many years, that was the only event I completed annually, until everything changed in 2014 when I secured a ballot place for the London Marathon.

Since then, running has become a huge part of my life and I have now completed 2 marathons, 13 half marathons, 3 ultra events and a 24-hour endurance challenge where I covered 112km. You’ll also usually find me at Parkrun most Saturday mornings!

Q: What inspired you to become a coach?

As my own running journey progressed, I realised that improving wasn’t just about running more miles. Once I started focusing on running form, structured speed work, strength training and smart pacing, I saw a huge improvement in my own performance.

That experience inspired me to become a coach so I could help others discover that running can feel easier, more enjoyable and goals can become more achievable with the right guidance and support.

Q: What do you enjoy most about coaching runners?

The most rewarding part of coaching is seeing runners grow in confidence and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach.

I love sharing my knowledge, supporting people through the ups and downs of training and seeing all the hard work pay off.

Q: What can participants expect from the RISE 8K training plan?

The RISE 8K training plan is designed to help participants progress gradually towards the event.

The sessions build steadily week by week, allowing runners to improve their fitness and confidence, while reducing the risk of injury or burnout.

Q: Is the plan suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! The plan is designed for beginners but can be adapted for all abilities - think ‘Couch to 8k’!

If you can comfortably walk for 20 minutes and are willing to stick with the programme, then this plan can help you achieve your 8K goal.

Q: What’s your top advice for someone starting a new training programme?

Start running at a slower pace than you think you need to.

This plan is not about speed - it’s about building confidence, consistency and endurance. If a run feels too difficult, it’s often a sign that you may simply be going too fast.

Trust the process and focus on gradual progress.

Q: How important is recovery in training?

Recovery is a vital part of training and something many runners underestimate.

Rest days allow your muscles to repair, rebuild and become stronger, helping your body adapt to the increased distance of the training and reducing the risk of injury.

Q: What motivates you as a coach?

Seeing runners achieve their goals - whatever they may be - is incredibly motivating.

For some, that might be completing their first continuous kilometre, achieving a personal best or simply learning to enjoy running.

Every achievement matters and every journey is unique.

Q: What’s one thing you hope RISE 8K participants take away from this experience?

I hope participants discover that running can be enjoyable, rewarding and this event in particular highlights how great the running community is.

Q: Finally, what message would you give to everyone taking part?

Be consistent - show up, even on the days you don’t feel motivated.

Trust the process, believe in yourself and remember to enjoy the journey along the way.

Most importantly, be proud of yourself for taking the first step.
